BETTY CARTER
Betty Carter is the founder and director emerita (1977-1997) of FIW, and an internationally
acclaimed author and teacher of family therapy. Her accomplishments include five major books
and innumerable chapters and articles which have immeasurably enriched the field. She has
received four personal awards for “significant contributions to the field of family therapy,”
and serves on the editorial advisory board of Family Process, The Journal of Marital and Family
Therapy, and The Journal of Feminist Family Therapy. A co-founder of “The Women’s Project
in Family Therapy,” Betty and her collaborators are credited by many as having transformed
the shape of family therapy thinking and practice. Betty’s Multicontextual Model (or FIW
Model) of family therapy forms the basis of the theoretical and methodological model taught
here at FIW. This approach, which expands and deepens the pioneering work of Murray Bowen,
is considered by many as among her most impressive accomplishments. Betty presently
conducts a “post-retirement” clinical practice in Amherst, Massachusetts and remains in close
contact with her many students and colleagues. Betty's newest book is Love, Honor and
Negotiate. To order it, click here.
