Skills for conflict resolution can be a useful addition to therapeutic work with high conflict couples and families. When couples are in therapy, concrete issues often arise such as: financial strain, career shifts, child-rearing disagreements, relationships with extended family, etc. This approach demonstrates how to use conflict as an opportunity to understand clients’ perspectives and develop more expansive options for resolution. A roadmap is presented for addressing the conflict so that the parties can come to a mutually agreeable and workable resolution. It does not push the parties to a specific result, but rather, with practical steps, brings them to their autonomous decision. The presentation includes case studies from divorcing couples and post-divorce conflict. Skills may apply as well to parent-adult child and other family relationships.
This workshop is highly interactive and informal. It entails several role plays and exercises, often illuminating and challenging assumptions about conflict.
