Millennials Rising! Redefining the Therapy Relationship Across Treatment Modalities

Presenter: Ron Taffel, Ph.D

March 1, 2019 • 9:30am – 12:30pm

Fee: $95.00 | FIW Alumni: $85.00

CEU's: 3

Milllennials (18-35 year olds) approach treatment with dramatic, new expectations of the therapy relationship. This workshop will begin with a slide presentation reviewing key myths vs. realities of millennial life. We’ll then focus on how to create secure connection with millennial clients, discussing the powerful impact on treatment of their often intense dysregulation, no-holds-barred self-expression, staunch belief in non-hierarchical collaboration, attunement to power-based micro-aggressions and impatience with anything remotely slow or inauthentic. Videos and case transcripts will demonstrate how to concretely engage millennial sensibilities, with special attention to: the necessity for therapist role-fluidity and the timing of self-disclosure; offering praise that strengthens and advice that is heard; staying remembered between sessions when life’s a blur; addressing socially embedded substance use; the craft of unscripted conversation, spirited debate and ‘fun’ to create new narratives; discussing unspoken identity biases; and, working with texts from patients’ lives to develop greater mindfulness and self-regulation.
